When setting up a hydraulic steering system for your boat, the number of wheel turns from lock to lock (full port to full starboard) is an important factor in determining the responsiveness and ease of handling. Below are general guidelines based on the type and size of the boat:

Motorboats and Powerboats

  1. Small Boats (up to 20 feet):

    • Typically require fewer wheel turns for quicker and more responsive steering. Around 3-4 turns lock to lock is common.
  2. Medium-Sized Boats (20-40 feet):

    • Usually need a balance between responsiveness and ease of steering. Around 4-5 turns lock to lock is typical, providing smooth and manageable steering.
  3. Large Boats (over 40 feet):

    • Often require more wheel turns for a more controlled and less sensitive steering experience. Around 5-6 turns lock to lock is common.
  4. Special Considerations:

    • High-Performance Boats: May have fewer turns for rapid changes in direction.
