Prevent Water Siphoning with Vetus Anti-Siphoning Vents

Ensure the longevity and efficiency of your marine engine installation with Vetus anti-siphoning vents, designed to mitigate the risks associated with water siphoning in wet exhaust systems. Engineered with precision and reliability, these vents offer an effective solution to prevent water ingress into the exhaust system and engine, safeguarding against potential damage and ensuring smooth operation.

Understanding the Risks

In situations where the cooling water injection point sits less than 15cm above the waterline, there's a risk of water siphoning into the exhaust system and even into the engine itself when the engine is turned off. However, this can be effectively prevented by utilizing an air vent in the system.

Proper Installation for Optimal Performance

To maximize the effectiveness of Vetus anti-siphoning vents, it's crucial to install them correctly. Place the vent at least 40 cm (16”) above the waterline, ensuring it does not exceed 2 meters (6.6 ft) above the waterline. For sailing ships, position the air vent as close to midships as possible to prevent it from falling below the required 40 cm (16”) when the ship heels under sail.

Connecting the Air Vent Pipe

Connect the air vent pipe to the air vents without valves, ensuring it drains towards the hull. The hull outlet should be positioned at least 15 cm (6”) above the waterline, even during sailing and heeling. In instances where water leaks occur, fitting an air vent pipe to the air vent without valve will effectively drain away any excess water, maintaining optimal performance.

Example of Installation

In certain installation scenarios, such as installation of vent without valve, a small amount of water may pour out of the outlet while the engine is running. This is normal and indicates the effective functioning of the system.

  • An air vent pipe can be fitted to the air vent with valve. This will drain away any water leaks.
